Flooding on Inland Route 70 at the Whalesback diversion will keep the road closed until about 12pm on Wednesday. "State Highway 1 will be open . . . [until 6pm Tuesday] to allow access to Kaikoura," Christchurch Transport Operations Centre advisor Steven Mann said

Some supermarket shoppers in Wellington and the South Island had to go home without bread tonight. Bakery shelves were bare at supermarkets through much of the capital and the South Island. A spokesman for Countdown said its stores in the North Island had supplies but the South Island was still disrupted. "We're working with suppliers to ensure any bread shortages in the south are kept to a minimum and together with our team and suppliers we're all working together to manage the weather as best we can

Warehousing cows in cubicles is being tested in Canterbury in a bid to stop effluent polluting waterways. The hangar-like barns are used to house dairy cows over winter and urine is collected and treated instead of being deposited directly on to paddocks. Willy Leferink is trialling a life indoors for his herd on his mid-Canterbury dairy farm. Because of the high impact of dairy farming on waterways, Environment Canterbury will only allow two-and-a-half cows per hectare - on current milk prices not enough for a profit

A University of Canterbury lecturer who uses humour and controversy to get students thinking has won a rare accolade. Marketing associate professor Ekant Veer has been awarded the Teaching Medal by the university's council. He is only the 10th lecturer to receive the institute's highest accolade for teaching excellence. Veer has been a popular lecturer during his 13-year career, previously gaining the university's Teaching Award and being voted Lecturer of the Year five times by students

It will be a freezing start to the school holidays, with forecasters warning black ice and sleet could cause havoc on South Island roads. MetService advised holiday-makers in Southland, Otago and Canterbury to drive with "extreme caution" on Saturday morning. South Island skifields could expect temperatures no warmer than -6C all weekend, with some dropping to -8C. "A front is expected to move east across the South Island overnight Friday and Saturday morning, bringing some light snow, or possibly freezing rain to some inland areas

A search and rescue operation is under way after four people failed to return home from a short walk on Friday afternoon. Police and land search and rescue staff are searching for three 22-year-old women and a 4-year-old girl in Silver Peaks, near Dunedin. Family members last heard from the group around 4pm, a police spokesperson said. Police do not believe the group were prepared for a lengthy stay in the bush, and are unlikely to have food and water

A front bringing heavy rain will start crossing the country today, bringing extensive downpours and snow by Thursday. Ahead of the front, people were being warned to prepare for more flooding. The country, particularly eastern areas of the South Island including Christchurch, was recovering after being battered by a freezing storm that caused widespread flooding late last week. The front, preceded by northwesterly rain, would move slowly northwards over the South Island during Wednesday and Thursday, MetService warned
